I wish we could stop calling neoliberals "neoliberal" and just call them "conservatives", or maybe "corporatists". They're not by any reasonable measure philosophical liberals and it just plays directly into their hands to allow them to own the term.

@JubalBarca Are neoliberals traditionalist? Do they prefer gradual, cautious change? If not, then they're not conservative.

@mpjgregoire I'd argue that, as commonly understood, neoliberals are usually both of those things; they are fundamentally in favour of retaining current socio-economic and political structures, and the societal balances of power that come with those. Some, but not all, are in favour of incremental social policy changes.

@JubalBarca When I think of neo-liberals, I think of people who read and nod along with *The Economist*. But of course that magazine is committed to "a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress"" -- such a sentiment is not only un-conservative, it is deliberately anti-conservative.
