To me, the thing that exemplifies "work smarter, not harder" is the Fallout 3 train hat - instead of creating an entirely new system for a train, they just have an NPC wearing a hat which is an entire train, hidden under the floor and running very quickly.

It's absurd, and someone could have spent a lot of time and effort on a new system to get the the same result in a less absurd way. But this works, so why not?

So my new motto is, "don't be afraid to wear a train as a hat."

Wtf is it with November? Suddenly everyone has to grow facial hair, stop masturbating, and write a novel? Is it just that the year has gone on for SO LONG that there's nothing else for it but to become 17th century ascetic Puritan authors? Can't we just, you know, have a normal month?

@thurloat Yeah I know I was absent for some time and figured there had been some discussion previously. Pleroma looks interesting, hopefully a little easier on the resources than Mastodon as well?

@thurloat I see the instance is a few versions behind any plans up updating or not worth the effort?

Ooooh, sweet - @github@twitter.com has a new "transfer this isse" beta feature - no more "I'll reopen this ticket in the appropriate repo - ❌ closes ticket - makes a new one with same words elsewhere βœ…"

Happy dance.

πŸ€” I may have to get a Land Line installed at home. The poor cell reception here caused me to miss not only two calls from my son's school, but several texts from his grandmother alerting me to the fact that his school called her when they couldn't reach me. It's one thing if I was living in a really rural area with only a dozen houses but I'm living in a populated town and failing to get service.
WiFi calling from my cell provider would be acceptable too.

@thurloat Now Rust is one I gave up on really quickly. Go I've written a few things in and continue to enjoy (though I admit still trying to make sure to write idiomatic go concurrency).
But with Rust, I wasn't looking to take a CS degree to learn the language. Many areas feel needlessly complex for me.

Having fun with Writing a Compiler in Go by Thorsten Ball, the sequel to Writing an Interpreter in Go. But for some reason I don't find the material is sticking with me quite as well as the first book. Looking forwards to doing a version of Bob Nystrom's Crafting an Interpreter (part 2)

@Toxic_Flange I think it's that I failed to find enough of an interesting stream or niche interests that I have on like Twitter or FB. I'll have to make effort to try harder

Whoa. I totally forgot all about Mastodon and I'm not sure why
